Ostrava is also a hotbed of sport – indeed Ostrava held the title “European City of Sport” in 2014. The nearby Jeseníky and Beskydy mountain ranges are a paradise for both winter and summer sports, and Ostrava itself is a renowned venue for major international sporting events. The Golden Spike athletics meeting attracts some of the world’s top athletes to the city every year. Ostrava’s large modern indoor arena was a venue for the 2015 Ice Hockey World Championship. Also, Ostrava hosted the European Figure-Skating Championships (2017) and IAAF Continental Cup (2018).
